PORT HARCOURT— Acting Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, has said that there was still much to be done in the fight against kidnapping and other related crimes in the country.

Speaking at a session on Conversation with the Inspector General of Police on Enhancing security in Nigeria, at the ongoing annual conference of the Nigerian Bar Association,  NBA, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State,  the acting IG said that new strategies were being introduced to fight crime to a standstill in the country.

Represented by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG Operations, Mr Hyacent Dagala,  the Police chief said that the Police had increased border patrols in the country, adding that it had also commenced what he termed scientific intelligence gathering.

He said that the Police was committed to matters of security with a view to reducing crime all over the country, adding that he had also strengthened community participation in effective policing.

The acting IG said that the Police has restructured its Police Fraud Unit to deepen its  fight against fraud within and outside the police system.

He assured that the Police will collaborate with Attorney-Generals and other stakeholders to achieve a  crime-free country.

Some of the panelists called for the review of the Police Act to conform with contemporary realities.

During an open interaction with the IG,  many wondered why the Police Act that was written in 1914 is still the document regulating the force.
