Buffon announces plan to retire

Gianluigi Buffon has revealed he plans to retire in two years’ time and claims he cannot be convinced to change his mind, even if offered a double-your-money deal.

The Juventus and Italy goalkeeper, 38, is determined to call an end to his career at the age of 40 before moving into scouting and recruitment.

Buffon says he has no interest in leaving Juve, who he joined 15 years ago, for more money elsewhere – though he is looking to the United States and China for future employment.

He told French magazine So Foot: ‘Even if I were offered twice my salary elsewhere, I would stay at Juve.

‘Doing so would make me proud as it is a worthy thing to do. I want to play at this level until I’m 40, then that will be it.’

Buffon, who joined Juventus from Parma for £32.6 million, has not ruled out moving into management but his main outlook is on another aspect of football.  ‘I have a wealth of experience, but I do not want to coach,’ he said. ‘I rather like the role of recruiter. They are ambitious.

‘I would go to nations like the United States or China, which have great potential for a large population.’ ‘If I do something, I do it with the idea to get to the top – without that I would stop living.’

Buffon looks on track for a seventh Serie A title with Juventus this season and his career honours also include two Coppa Italia trophies and the World Cup.
