Umu Eze has emerged champion of the 2015 edition of the Asagba of Asaba football tournament held in honour of the Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Chike Edozien.
The tournament started in June and after series of matches, two teams, Ume Eze and Umu Agu clashed in the final match held weekend at the Federal College of Education (Technical) in Asaba.
In the finale, watched by passionate fans, who came in their hundreds to support their respective teams, it was Umu Eze, the ancestral home of the Asagba of Asaba that had the last laugh, winning 1-0.
In the tension-soaked encounter that was witnessed by the children and grand children of the Asagba, Umu Eze showed great defensive play in repelling off the attacking forays of Umu Agu, who were the defending champions of the competition that started last year to mark the birthday celebration of the paramount ruler of the Asaba community.
Burning with a desire not to allow Umu Agu have its way in this year’s final, players of Umu Eze scored the only goal of the game in the closing stages of the first half and held on to record a much deserved victory.
The only goal was scored by Peter Onwuachi, who angled in a right volley into the top left-hand corner of Umu Agu’s goalpost. That goal elicited wild jubilations from Ume Eze fans, who were later subjected to nerve-rending moments from Umu Agu players who raided the defence of their opponents in search of the equaliser.
Much as the players tried, they could not break down the defence of Umu Eze and when the centre referee blew to end the match, fans of Umu Eze ran into the pitch to celebrate with their victorious players, who were carried shoulders high.
