Lagos cautions residents over persistent harmattan

LAGOS—As harmattan haze persists, Lagos State Government yesterday, urged residents to take precautionary measures as the state is to experience the dry dusty weather otherwise called harmattan for some time to come.

The state Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello who stated this, yesterday, said the weather forecast from the Ministry of the Environment indicated that the maximum temperature expected all through this week is 31oC while the Minimum temperature of 25oC is expected.

Bello said that the weather is going to be hazy while dusty warm days will be experienced early in the morning and fog is expected in the evenings.

He therefore advised all motorists and other road users to be cautious as visibility will be impaired, reduce speed limits and observe road signs so as to prevent accidents.

According to him; “As our environment becomes dusty and hazy we urge residents to also observe basic health and environmental precautionary measures such as regular hand washing with soap and water as the weather may cause cause catarrh, pneumonia, asthma, malaria and other respiratory related illness which maybe rampant during this period.

He therefore, warned residents to avoid bush and waste burning during this period as this may lead to fire outbreak as well as ensure that drains around their homes are well cleaned and maintained to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes (malaria causing parasite).

Bello also warned residents who still patronize cart pushers to desist from the illegal act as it is inimical to the waste management policy of the state government.

“This  is a clarion call to Lagosians and entire members of the public in other to attain a cleaner and healthier environment,” he said.
