As traffic gridlock returned to the ever busy Lagos Abeokuta expressway, motorists and residents have cried out to relevant authorities of the Federal and state governments to intervene by fixing the failed portions of the road.
Last week, Lagos State Government, through the State Public Works Corporation, LSPWC, completed maintenance work on the collapsed section of Alimosho road by Iyana Dopemu Bus-Stop. However, the fixture, according to residents had no appreciable positive impact on the traffic gridlock in the area.
It will be recalled that during the public unveiling of Alimosho Model City Plan by the state government, experts tasked the state authorities to kick-start an urban renewal scheme, which thrust would include provision of infrastructure as no meaningful development can take place within the area without such projects.
They argued that any feat without corresponding infrastructure would rather compound the present challenge of development confronting the area.
The 10-year plan -2010-2020, encompasses the ‘old’ Alimosho local government area, which consists of six identified Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), namely, Ayobo-Ipaja, Egbeda-Akowonjo, Agbado Oke – Odo, Mosan-Okunola, Igando Ikotun, and Egbe Idimu.
Sequel to the current traffic gridlock in the area, state government had carried out maintenance work on both Dopemu and Iyana Ipaja Bridges, on March 15th, to April 5th, 2014, with the aim of improving traffic movement in the area.
Some of the features of maintenance work include: The removal of expansion joints and replacement of the new ones, re-asphalting of the road, traffic markings and repainting of the median for easy visibility for drivers at night.
