LAGOS—SENIOR Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Lagos State University chapter, SSANU-LASU, yesterday suspended its two-month old, even as it gave the university management till today to pay its members their June and July salaries withheld during the strike.
The union’s decision was contained in a letter addressed to the Chairman, Lagos State University Governing Council, Mr. Olabode Agusto, on August 1, 2014 after its congress.
SSANU said the decision was reached after it reviewed and considered among other things, the assurance by the university management and the council to resolve its demand on outstanding promotions at the next council meeting slated for August 29, 2014.
According to the chairman, SSANU-LASU, Mr. Saheed Oseni, the union decided to suspend the strike to allow the university to successfully hold its on-going 19th Convocation.
Oseni said: “It is true that we have suspended our strike to give the governing council of the university the time to resolve the issue of the outstanding promotions of our members for the 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 sessions, at its next meeting on August 29, 2014. The council chairman spoke to us in person, so we need not doubt his integrity and sincerity.
“However, for our June and July salaries that have been held up because we were fighting for the injustice meted against our members, we have given the management latest by tomorrow (today), to pay us, so that the much needed everlasting peace will return to the university.”
