The United Nations Institute for Training and Research UNITAR has lauded the Rivers State Government for its numerous achievements recorded in the education sector over the years. The UNITAR Programme Manager in Nigeria Dr Minimah Edmundson stated this when they paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Education Rivers State, Dame Alice Lawrence-Nemi in her office in Port Harcourt.
Edmundson stated that the rebuilding and upgrading of the infrastructures in schools and introduction of ICT are all steps in the right direction. He also said that the elaborate training and upgrading of the teachers in the preparation and delivery of lessons in line with approved curricula at the different levels have been yielding positive results.
He, however, proposed to the Commissioner for the introduction of monitoring and evaluation for Efficient Education Systems (EES). He explained that the EES is a computer-based system which uses current information technology to provide modern solutions that will be needed to establish educational infrastructure that will empower teachers to work efficiently and effectively saying, the EES ensures effectiveness and efficiency.
According to him, the mode of its operations include Biometric clock-in-devices which eliminate ghost teachers (save cost for the state), eliminate falsification of signing attendance on note books, eliminate signing attendance by proxy, eliminate artificial truancy; and cover-ups by the administrative heads.
