Our scorecard in education: It can be better – Govt

LAGOS State Government at the weekend restated its commitment to the improvement of all inputs necessary for the delivery of quality education in the state’s public schools to produce potential future leaders of the country.

Enumerating the achievments of the government in the education sector in the last six years, the  Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Aderemi Ibirogba,  said the state builts 5,204 new classrooms to cater for the growing student population which has increased over the years to 1,198,624 (578,504 in primary and 620,120 in secondary schools). All these are housed in the 664 schools spread across the state.

The state he added, also rehabilitated 6,666 classrooms within the period, provided 197 schools with science laboratory, built ICT laboratory in 120 schools, supplied 212 schools with science materials and installed intro-tech laboratories in 73 schools. Also, 1,409,476 textbooks were distributed freely to students while 387,133 furniture were provided to students to make them learn in a conducive environment.

We did not suspend principal-LASG

Lagos State Government also debunked reports (not Vanguard) that the Principal of Ikeja Junior Grammar School, Mrs. Adesiyan Balogun has been suspended from office.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Aderemi Ibirogba, who made this known said; “At no time did the state government place the principal on suspension over a negative publication in a national daily or for any other reason.

Ibirogba affirmed that the said principal was, in line with Lagos State Civil Service Rules, asked to explain the situation in her school to enable government assess the true position of things and she has since replied.

According to him, “Mrs Balogun is still an officer of the State Civil Service and the Principal of Ikeja Junior Grammar School, Oshodi, where she is expected to uphold the State’s high standard of education in the School.

“The government has no reason to suspend the said Principal and assures Lagosians of the continued commitment of the administration to the provision of qualitative education in a conducive environment.”
