Why we re-joined NLC, by NASU

By JOHNBOSCO AGBAKWURU

ABUJA—NON-ACADEMIC Staff Union of Education and Associated Institutions, NASU said that its decision to come back to the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, was to ensure that the labour mother union was strengthened and energized.

The General Secretary of NASU, Comrade Peter Adeyemi who stated this in Abuja said that though the coming back of NASU to NLC was not expected to be rosy, members were determined to join the progressives within the movement to move the union forward.

Comrade Adeyemi explained that NASU decided to pull out of NLC as a result of bad treatment given to them during the NLC’s last delegate Conference, saying that despite the enormous contributions of the union, they were badly treated at the conference.

On what kind of reception NASU members would get from NLC, he said, “The atmosphere is not going to be conducive and we are not unmindful of that. As trade union leaders, we are not suppose to be looking for a rosy environment even within the movement itself, I am not expecting that the people will sit down and clap for me welcome me back because there may be other reasons why they will not want to do that so.

“We said we are determined to return whether people give us rousing welcome or hostile welcome. Our own cardinal objective is let us go back and work with others but nobody will reject our coming back because there are people that are progressives elements that had said, don’t continue to stay outside.”

The NASU General Secretary stated that there was a time in the history of NLC when the union was looked at by the then administration as the alternate government that was interested in the welfare of Nigerian workers during the leadership of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the union seemed to have lost focus.
