Ex-militants ‘Commanders’ move against oil theft

By JIMITOTA ONOYUME

PORT HARCOURT— EX-militant commanders in Delta State have resolved to move against oil theft and other related crimes in the region.

The ex-militant commanders, under the aegis of Leadership Forum for Peace in Niger Delta, said they will no longer tolerate incidence of oil theft and kidnapping in the Niger Delta.

‘General’ Reuben Wilson, who spoke in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, yesterday, said in furtherance of their resolve, they had to mobilise to rescue some foreigners, who were taken hostage in Bayelsa State.

He said: “Only two weeks ago, some of the leaders, who commanded camps in the creeks before they surrendered their guns for the government’s amnesty, were involved in securing some foreigners, who were kidnapped in Bayelsa State.”

He said they will do their best to discourage oil theft and kidnapping in the region.

Pledging support for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan come 2015, Wilson said ex-commanders had started meeting to strategise on how to discourage members from returning to crime.
