Varied reactions on Post-UTME exercise

Varied reactions on Post-UTME exercise

Many Nigerians are of the opinion that the Post University Tertiary Matriculation Examination, (Post-UTME) has come to stay.

Amidst inconveniencies candidates suffer in the course of taking this particular examination, they still believe that it is the best way to test the true performance of any intending undergraduate as there are several malpractices assciated with the conduct of Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination. These are some of their opinions compiled by ANOZIE EGOLE

There is less malpractice in it than in JAMB —Esewata Joy (Student)

For me, Post-UTME is great. It is easier to cheat in JAMB than in Post- UTME because, the questions there were set by the school so they know how to control malpractice in the examination. I can’t deny the fact that Joint Admission and Matriculation Board is a very organized and tough examination.

But because of the rate of malpractice in the examination in recent times, it makes it lose quality and I am sure that was one of the reasons for the introduction of the Post UTME at least, for Universities to know the quality of undergraduates they want to admit into their institutions.

I am sure that is the reason why schools organize the examination themselves. Like in my own school, Delta State University, (DELSU), I didn’t witness any malpractice. Although there is no way an examination can be conducted without cases of examination malpractice. If there was anything like that in my school, it is at a much reduced rate.

Talking about the uniformity in the examination fee, there is no way you will expect all the schools to pay the same amount. Since not all the schools follow the same procedure for the examination, there is no way they will pay the same amount there must be differences.

Some pay directly to the school while others like UNILORIN pay with their ATM cards which to me, is more stressful. I am still speaking for my own school (DELSU), the examination was so tough to the extent that my question paper is different from that of my neighbor who is offering the same course with me. In this case, you will find it very difficult to cheat.

If you insist on cheating, you will end up copying the wrong answer. To me, I see that as the best way to test intending undergraduates. Because, you will see somebody who scored 260 in JAMB but cannot be able to score up to 40 in Post-UTME in this case, you will asking yourself how did this person score this high mark in JAMB but cannot prove it in Post-UTME?

People are saying that even after passing the Post-UTME, they still find it difficult to gain admission even after lobbying. We cannot deny the fact that there are some evil ones in the school that gives admission to who didn’t pass the examination.

The problem is corruption and it is not only there in Post- UTME it is everywhere in the country. Some people who didn’t score high will use money to upgrade their marks. Those people who passed very well stand the chances of losing their admissions to those corrupt candidates which is not good. The government should find a way of eradicating such a thing.

There can’t be zero malpractice in the examination—-Ezeabasili Boniface (Industrialist)

To me, I don’t think there is any need to abolish the examination because; it is the best way to test students. We are all human beings and therefore, we should take into cognizance the human factor as well. As a parent, I will advise fellow parents to look at their pocket in making choices for their children’s school.

They should go for the cheap ones and do not think about abolishing the examination. Talking about the malpractice level of the examination, it can’t be completely ruled out. In as much as we are all human beings, there are possibilities that there supposed to be challenges in the process of carrying out a task. What we should be looking at is, how to tackle the challenges .

As we all can see, the introduction of that examination has given quality and value to our graduates. I strongly advise the government to make policies that will improve the test. If you think that education is costly, try ignorance.
