Nigerite takes renewable energy campaign to schools

By Kingsley Adegboye

A major player in the building materials sector, Messrs Nigerite Ltd, has joined the campaign for the introduction of  renewable energy to reduce the worrisome effects of climate change and global warming being experienced across Nigeria.

Speaking last week at the presentation of awards to winners of the 1st Lagos Green Schools Essay Competition organized by Nigerite, its  managing director  Mr. Jean-Luc Viatour said the company is  supporting the the Lagos State government in raising awareness on the importance of sustainable living.

According to him, the competition  which has “Embracing renewable energy for all” was organised to complement  the massive strides the State government has taken towards the achievement of its mega-city project.  Viatour explained that the competition is to engage the youth and  generate awareness on the need to protect the earth.

“Our contribution to the three Rs of sustainability Reduction, Recycling and Reuse include recycling 100 percent of the dry waste from our production processes, sorting all the waste from our offices using labeled bins: blue bins for paper and carton waste; orange bins for plastic and red bins for other waste.  The waste paper and cartons generated in our offices are reused in the factory as Waste Paper Kraft WPK and the plastic waste is marked for recycling through private initiatives”, he said.

The Nigerite boss who was elated at the turnout of the schools, said the youth are the leaders of tomorrow and must understand at an early age the giant strides being taken to combat the effects of global warming in order to protect the future.

“The youth must understand that in their own way they too can join the fight against the devastating effects of global warming. We must all ask ourselves the question, what can I do today to save the planet?  We must all examine our mindsets and hope that this small gathering of the great minds will start to adopt good attitudes to sustainability”, Viatour said.
