The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Cross River State, Mr. Mike Igini, has admonished Nigerians to learn to protect their rights saying that was the only way democracy can be sustained in the country.
He also called for the empowerment of the people to enable them know their rights and that of Non Governmental Organizations in the country.
He said this at a press conference in Lagos organized by a human Right Group, Citizen Right And Empowerment Advocacy (CREMA), with the topic “An Imperative For National Integration & Development”.
Mr. Igini said Non Governmental organizations had been the back bone of saving the country from collapse. He advised the leaders to go back to the template of the forefathers who fought vigorously to sustain the country from disintegration, adding that INEC will continue to ensure that men of integrity come to power.
The Executive Director of the organization, Mr. Rexkennedy Saltlove, said the mission of CREMA was to empower the citizens in the country to know their rights and defend them when the need arose saying that they were bent on fighting for the cause of the oppressed and the victimized in the society.
The Human Rights Organization president, further said their mission was to protect those whose rights had been violated as well as ensuring that institutional frameworks that would facilitate and galvanize the economic growth and development of the country were implemented.
The Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice , Mr. Ade Ipaye SAN, in a key note address said every one deserved protection because that was the reason laws were made and that Nigerians should learn to protect and defend their rights.
He also stressed the need to educate the people of their rights, adding that Lagos State Government had been putting measures in place to ensure the safety of Lagosians.
