ABUJA – Not fewer than 100 political parties are to present candidates for the Tunisian general elections on Sunday, October 23, few months after the general revolution that ousted former President Ben Ali.
The upcoming elections, will feature 11,000 candidates 60 per cent of whom are independent candidates, who are contesting for various offices including the office of the head of government and Prime Minister.
Information from the Tunisian Embassy in Abuja revealed that the elections would be conducted by the Higher Independent Body for elections, which has been saddled with the task of ensuring democratic, pluralistic and transparent elections.
The Election Body comprises a central committee based in Tunis and commissions that are established at the constituency level with headquarters in the capitals of the governorates and diplomatic missions.
Tunisia was engulfed in riots in January over unemployment and corruption leading to ouster of President Ben Ali.
