FMC strike: Union, management trade blames

By Anayo Okoli

Umuahia—AS the strike embarked upon by Medical Laboratory Scientists of Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Umuahia, Abia State, lingers, the union and  management of the hospital are currently trading blames over the cause of the action.

While the union has called for resignation of the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Chuku Abali, for allegedly encouraging quackery, Abali, on his part, has described the strike as illegal, saying the union contravened labour laws which provided for a 30-day ultimatum, followed by 21 days and another  seven days  before industrial action could be declared.

Members of the union had last week embarked on strike over the indefinite suspension of one of their members, Mr. Anene Ifeanyichukwu, for alleged wrong routing of his casual leave.

Ifeanyichukwu was said to have directed his letter seeking permission to go on casual leave to the head of department of laboratory services instead of a clinical pathologist.
