ABEOKUTA—As reactions continue to trail President Goodluck Jonathan’s suggestion for a six-year single term tenure for President and state governors, a former member of the House of Representatives from Ogun state, Honourable Kayode Amusan has appealed to Nigerians, particularly the political class to accept the proposal in good faith.
Amusan who addressed journalists on the state of the nation, explained that the president meant well for the country’s political advancement taking into consideration the problems associated with second term bids.
He noted that the desperation to be in office for the second term by the president and state governors had always led to lack of focus and concentration in fulfilling their mandates to the electorate.
A single term of six years is enough for any visionary and focused president and state executive to prove his worth.
” I therefore appeal to all categories of politician in the country particularly the present lawmakers to examine critically the gains of the proposal for it is an opportunity to reduce the expenditure on elections.
We should remember that similar proposals that the federal government have made and which people kicked against are today of immense value and benefits to the populace, the case of privatisation of the communication, aviation an the hospitality sectors readily comes to mind” he said
He claimed that since the 1999 constitution makes provision for two term, it could equally be amended to accommodate the new development, adding that the question
