COREN blames collapsed buildings on builders, contractors

BY TONY EDIKE

ENUGU – Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, has blamed building collapse on builders, contractors and technicians.

Relatedly, Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State has urged COREN to impose tougher penalties on  members found to have executed poor jobs on projects.

Speaking at the 20th Zonal Engineering Assembly  in Enugu, Registrar of COREN,  Mr. Felix Atume, noted  that most buildings that had collapsed in the country were mostly houses owned by individuals.

Atume noted that buildings owned by  governments and organisations hardly  collapse, pointing  out that instead of  some owners of houses to seek the services of qualified engineers, they prefer to use quacks  who charge less than engineers.

At a briefing on the Zonal Engineering Assembly, President of COREN, Mr. Mustapha Bulama, said the organisation has decided to prosecute builders and contractors who undertake shoddy jobs, pointing out that a tribunal had been set up to handle cases of collapsed buildings.
