FG urged to exploit winds for alternative energy

Bursari – Rep. Goni Bukar, representing Bursari Federal Constituency, on Friday challenged the Federal Government to exploit the strong winds in the state to develop wind energy for electricity supply.

Goni, who gave the challenge in Jiluri at a reception organised in his honour, said “government should establish windmills that will generate electricity as an alternative source of energy for the people.

“Yobe has abundant strong winds throughout the year that can generate adequate electricity to provide power to the people to boost their economy”.

Goni noted that he would use his new mandate in the national assembly to ensure that the proposed bill on Desertification Control Commission was actualised.

“I will liaise with my colleagues from other states affected by the scourge of desertification to mount pressure for passage of the bill seeking to establish the Desertification Control Commission.

“Desertification like the problem of Niger Delta, has negatively affected the environment and economy of the people,” he said.

He pointed out that the environmental menace caused by desertification “is a national problem that deserved serious attention with a national outlook”.

Goni said he will dedicate his life to the people of his constituency “the people have entrusted their future in me by consistently voting me to represent them; I am indebted to you and the future generation of this area.

“I intend to invest more in water supply, rural electrification, education and economic empowerment.

“This  in addition to the 18 boreholes which I have already sunk and the scholarship provided to 20 university undergraduates” he said.

The legislator urged beneficiaries of the 600 motorcycles, 45 sewing machines and 50 water pumps from his economic empowerment programme to judiciously use the equipment for self- employment and reliance. (NAN)
