LAGOS — In line with its corporate social responsibility and the celebration of its golden jubilee, the Rotary Club of Lagos has pledged to construct eight modern public conveniences at the Seme Border between Nigeria and Benin Republic for the use of travellers on the West African coast.

The executives of the club stated this yesterday, during a courtesy visit to the head office of the Vanguard Newspapers, in Lagos.

The past Assistant Governor and a member of the team, Rotarian Christopher Adeoye Tugbobo, told a team of senior editors of Vanguard that the club decided to embark on what he dubbed ‘star project’ to mark its  golden jubilee in order to ensure comfort for Nigerians and other West African travellers on the route.

According to Tugbobo: “We want to roll out the drums for our milestone celebrations at 50. One of the major benefits of the club is the community and humanitarian service that we provide.

We usually think of how we can help the community in which we exist. We do some consultations with the community and find out what they need. The salient needs of the people are boreholes and we provide that.”

“Having existed for 50 years, many years ago a blind man will find it difficult to get education, but when brail was invented, it was easy for the blind to be educated. In 1982, Rotary Club of Lagos established the Brail Press for the Blind. We have constantly donated hospital equipment to Massey Hospital Lagos.”

“We provided funds and moral assistance for children who have heart problems. For the amputees, we embarked on this project 20 years ago with support from some Indians and we give our financial support to these poeple”. He affirmed.

He also noted that the club has given interest-free micro finance of N15,000 to twenty market women in Lagos and built  a public toilet in Campus Square  in conjunction with Coca cola.

“ Within that Campus Square, we usually have Christmas party for children. We have also setup business scholl in Osborne, Ikoyi. We have also set up rotary clubs in secondary schools and higher institution- our members in tertiary institutions are called rotaractors. We also organise career counseling to secondary school students. Occasionally, we gather schools and professionals and we address them.”

Rotary Club of Lagos presently has 2170 members in its district and 68 in its club which includes 6 women.
