Music

Our mission is to cause a revolution in the music industry – Teenage music stars

They are three sisters of same parentage. The eldest, Jemima will be 17 next month, while Jesimiel and Jeiel are 15 and 10 years respectively. They may be young at heart, yet the trio speaks and acts like matured adults as they launch themselves into the mainstream music world with a promise to cause a revolution across the globe.

Although they hail from Kaduna State, they have lived all their lives in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State from where their father, Dr Abel Damina, National President of the youth wing of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria oversees the Power City Ministries. The trio recently addressed a world press conference in Lagos where they launched themselves into the music scene.

In this interview with our Reporter, Jemima(whose stage name is Myma, speaks on the birth of their music project, the Triple J plus which has already been endorsed by the National chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria(CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor and the General Overseer of the KICC, Pastor Mathew Ashimolowo, their upbringing, the nation’s music industry and the politics in Nigeria.

Excerpt

How did this project begin?

We were about 8 and 9 years respectively when we conceived the idea to sing our own song. We actually started from the point when my immediate younger sister, Jesimiel whose stage name is Jesi, started writing songs and I used to observe, commend and criticize the songs.

I believe that the encouragements I gave her really contributed to the quality of songs she was doing. She loved to write songs. Maybe, I should just say it was like a hobby at the beginning but we were soon to discover that God was preparing us for a music revolution in the country, to put wholesome lyrics to good music, instead of the meaningless jabber that constitutes modern music.

What we find today in most cases are musicians who delight in dancing virtually nude on stage, musicians who do not truly glorify God with their songs and suggestive dance steps.

Come to think of it, our father, Dr Abel Damina is a world renowned pastor whom God has used to touch lives across the globe. He is currently the national president of the youth wing of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria(PFN) and you must have been aware of the revolution that the youths in the Pentecostal churches in Nigeria provoked sometime last year, preparatory to this year’s elections. We are not therefore surprised that not many youths have allowed themselves to be used as thugs during the recently concluded elections. That is an achievement. And we as his children are now on the verge of causing a revolution in the music industry.

But you are still young to achieve that dream ?

Yes, we are young in age but not at heart. Don’t forget, David was a young boy but God chose to use him to do exploit in his time. And he was alone. But here we are, three young sisters_Jemima, Jesimiel and Jewel_ with Jesus as our backbone(that is why we call ourselves the triple j plus, because our names all begin with the letter j and the fourth person with the letter j is Jesus who is actually our song director and guide.

We want to use our music to cause a positive change in the world as well as make a lasting impact on our generation. All we need is your support, encouragements and prayers. We have already performed in London, the United States of America and in South Africa. In fact, some of our video clips were shot in those countries.

Jesi’s first song was titled ‘’prayer”. She considers it a bit silly now, but back then it was an achievement and we used to sing it all the time. She was seven years old when she wrote ‘Prayer’.

How did you draw the inspiration to do this?

Naturally, I think about many situations we faced in life. But the Holy Spirit used those moments to fix some tunes in our heart and they usually develop into songs; but sometimes they don’t.

Let’s talk about some of the songs!

We have a track titled ‘XYZ’. We did the track as a fun song, but we wanted people to understand that women are precious and that the menfolk should not disrespect them. Women should be proud of whom they are in Christ.

It is said that pastor’s children are usually wayward, what makes you different?

It is not the fault of the kids alone but because their parents sometimes handle them with too much ‘love’ and freedom to cover up for their own absences and lack of involvement in the kids’ lives. The Bible commands the parents to train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Our mum always says training requires presence.

Triple J plus enjoys two important ingredients: love and discipline. We are blessed right from our family to our church and to our school. We have experienced and known what most kids, even adults do not know.

You are still in school. How are you planning to combine your education and music?

Yes, we know that this career will interfere with our school work but our mum helps us by ensuring our school work does not suffer. School comes first but this is to be expected. It is the life of a pop star, so we are ready for it.

How has your parental background influenced your career in music?

They have given us insight into most things in life for and above our ages which have made us understand life better, and we are able to write meaningful songs with inspiring lyrics.

Have you ever quarreled in the course of composing your songs?

Oh yes! Severally, but not necessarily over the lyrics of the songs but mostly over who takes which part and stuff like that. But we do quarrel over the lyrics so that they can suite both parties (Myma and Jesi)

Our target?

To influence all existing generations with the positive message that they need to hear but are not aware of. We express this in our lyrics, stuff everyone can relate to at same point his/her life. To be models for the upcoming generation, that being a Godly person is not boring, but the most essential and exciting vocation that can be.
