Nigeria begin WAFU title defence *Seek revenge on Niger

Nigeria ‘B’ team have a chance to avenge their ouster by Niger at the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) when both teams clash again at this year’s WAFU Nations Cup, which kicks off in Abeokuta Thursday.

Niger upset their Nigerian counterparts 2-0 on aggregate to qualify for the CHAN hosted by Sudan earlier this year.

Both teams are now drawn in Group A of the sub-regional WAFU along with Mali and Liberia, while last year’s beaten finalists Senegal, Ghana, The Gambia and Togo are in Group B.

Nigeria are the defending champions after they beat Senegal 2-0 in last year’s final at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta.

They were captained by Solomon Okpako and also included Ahmed Musa, Gabriel Reuben, Terna Suswam, Gbolahan Salami, goalkeeper Bassey Akpan and Eugene Salami.

They begin their title defence against fellow Eagles of Mali on the opening day of the tournament on Thursday, while Senegal clash with Gambia.
