Polls: NDI lauds Jonathan

BY DANIEL IDONOR

ABUJA-THE National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, NDI, has commended President Goodluck Jonathan for demonstrating remarkable leadership in the preparation and run-up to the forthcoming national elections.

Speaking during an audience at State House, yesterday, former Canadian Prime Minister, Mr. Joe Clark, said “there is no doubt that you have demonstrated remarkable leadership in dealing with the issues we have seen.”

Mr. Clark said the NDI was encouraged by President Jonathan’s continued confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, adding that the delegation had held extensive discussions with stakeholders, including political parties, civil society groups and the electoral body.

Responding to the comments by members of the delegation, President Jonathan said he had a responsibility to lead by example.

“Whether I am a candidate or not, I must conduct an election that would meet global minimum standards of transparency and fairness,” the President said.

He said Nigeria could not aspire to occupy any leadership position in Africa or elsewhere without a free, fair and transparent election, stating that, “several countries in Africa have had successful elections, and if we don’t get it right, we can’t lead anybody or call  anybody to order when they miss the mark.”
