Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC’s office in Ughelli, headquarters of Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, was on Monday night razed.
The incident occurred three days to the governorship re-run election in the state fixed for Thursday.
INEC had fixed the date for the election following the November 9, 2010, annulment of the 2007 governorship polls in state.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Charles Muka, confirmed the incident, Tuesday in Asaba, adding that fire fighters were still trying to put off the fire, as at 7 a.m.Tuesday.
He could, however, not confirm the cause of the inferno, but said that the security guard on duty in the office at the time of the incident had been arrested.
“We are aware of the incident and we have arrested the securityman on duty to explain what happened. He will assist us in our investigation to unearth the true cause of the fire,” Muka said.
The INEC Public Affairs Officer in Delta State, Mr. Livvy Unigwe, also confirmed the incident, adding that the commission had not received a detailed report on it.
It was, however, gathered that the incident may not be unconnected with a clash, earlier on Monday, between members of two rival political parties in the area.
