TRAGEDY hit the Edo State government-owned Institute of Management and Technology, Usen, as two of its students were reported killed, Tuesday, when a vehicle ran into a barricade mounted on the Benin – Ore Road by the students.
The students were said to be protesting the postponement o f their terminal examination by the lecturers over non-payment of their salary by the Edo State government.
It was also gathered that another student of the institute sustained serious injuries following the accident, and was taken to an undisclosed hospital.
It was further learnt that mask-wearing protesting students of the Institute Usen, had barricaded the Benin-Ore Road and made bonfires along the road which caused long vehicular traffic.
A Benin bound ash colored Kia vehicle, which registration number could not be ascertained was stopped by the protesting students, but the driver of the vehicle in a bid to force his way was said to have ran into some of the students, killing two and injuring another in the process.
The driver of the vehicle was said to have fled into the bush after the incident and the angry students were reported to have damaged the vehicle.
Edo State Police Command, Mr. Peter Ogboi confirmed the students’ protest but said he was not aware of any accident leading to the death of any student when contacted.
Confirming the students’ protest at Igueben, he denied the seizure of gun from a policeman by the students.
It was learnt that some students of the College of Education, Igueben have been arrested while investigation continues.
