…Strike stops his unveiling

By Fidelis Ebu
The much publicised unveiling of new Eagles coach, Samson Siasia by the Nigeria Football Federation planned for yesterday in Abuja could not take place afterall, no thanks to the nationwide warning strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress to press home its demand for N18,000 minimum wage.

Not much has been heard about the new date, but a source from the Nigeria Football Federation told Sports Vanguard that the NFF executive committee would soon  meet to re_schedule the event.

Inside sources, however, hinted that Siasia may now be unveiled at the end of November just before his December 1 resumption date.
The Abuja National Stadium, venue of the event was sealed off by officials said to be from the NLC, just as early callers for the event were politely turned back.

Efforts to get the NFF president, Aminu Maigari and other executive committee members of the federation proved futile as they would not pick their calls.

In Lagos, the national stadium was also locked and hundreds of athletes, workers and those with businesses in the Sports City could not gain access to the arena. Stern-looking security personnel were at the gate and turned back callers to the complex.Siasia had last week defeated Stephen Keshi at the interview conducted by Chris Green_led NFF technical committee.

The NFF executive committee during its emergency meeting approved and scheduled yesterday for the official signing of the contract with the new coach and his unveiling to the media.

The 43_year_old Siasia has been given a four_year contract, renewable after the first two years based on performance.
His Dutch assistant, Simon Kalika, is due in the country Wednesday from Amsterdam.

Siasia will be an observer when the Super Eagles tackle Iran in Teheran in a friendly next week Wednesday with caretaker coach, Austin Eguavoen, still calling the shots.

The Eagles resume the qualifying campaign for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea in March at home against Ethiopia. They trail Group B leaders Guinea by three points after two rounds of matches with only the overall group leaders guaranteed automatic tickets to the next Nations Cup.
