Is GT out of the Storm?

GT Guitarman

By Lolade Sowoolu
It took him nearly four years to debut with an album even though his talents were obvious and the crowd craved endlessly for him. About eight months down that release, GT is still yet to find a place in the market and he’s confronted with the decision that will ultimately create a music future for him or nullify the progress he’s made so far. ‘Do I leave? Or do I stay?’; that is the dilemma.

Gbemiro Tokunbo Akigbogun a.k a GT the guitarman is one artiste that has been severally reported to have quit the record label he’s signed on, Storm Records. The series of reports have been founded on claims of dis-satisfaction by the young musician and the believability of the claims are enhanced by continuous diminishing relevance of the artiste in public glare.

Early last week, the story broke again and was told with a tone of finality suggesting that this time around GT is leaving Storm for good.

When GT was contacted on the fresh rounds of speculations, this is what he had to say:

“I’m not saying I’m going to leave but I’m not going to stay there forever. I think it must be private conversations with some of my friends that must have leaked out to the press because I’ve not given any official position on this yet.

However I think you should know that my contract with them (the label) expired about two years ago. My mind is not made up yet on this matter (of  leaving) but I’d say I’m still with them (Storm)”.

Experts in Nigeria’s music business have debated and agreed that GT is one of the most talented but under-celebrated young musicians Nigeria has. A PR mogul who wouldn’t like to be quoted also submits that GT may not make headway until he leaves the label because ‘Storm is a Hip Hop label’ and ‘GT doesn’t do Hip Hop’.

Citing fast-rising talented musician and vocalist, Bez as example, our Public Relations expert says ‘he (GT) is likely to make more progress on his own pending when he gets an appropriate label to sign him on’.

Storm 360 Records is stirred by Obi Asika and a quiet partner. The label is home to rappers Sasha, Naeto C, Sauce Kid, and singers YQ and Tolu Martins among others.
