Defence Minister Israel Katz told media that Israel would have killed Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during the war between the two countries if the opportunity had presented itself.

“I believe we have delivered a significant hit to the nuclear programme, and I can also say that we have delayed it by several years,” he said.

“I instructed the Israeli army to respond forcefully to Iran’s violation of the ceasefire by launching powerful strikes against regime targets in the heart of Tehran,” Katz said in a statement.

In a dramatic turn of events yesterday, the Islamic Republic of Iran signaled its willingness to pursue a ceasefire in its ongoing war with Israel, even as heavy Israeli air raids continued to pound critical targets in and around Tehran, including the headquarters of Iran’s state television.

The Israeli strikes have so far killed at least 224 people, including top military commanders, nuclear scientists but also civilians.

The UK leader said his talk on Friday with Netanyahu “included discussions about the safety and security of Israel”.
