THE Federal Government on Monday, hinted that it is considering empowering flood-prone communities to manage their own safety as part of measures aimed at addressing the growing threat of flood-related disasters nationwide.

With the peak of the rainy season approaching, Nigeria is once again staring at the grim prospect of devastating floods that could displace millions, destroy farmlands, and disrupt socio-economic activities.

AS the rains and water level rise, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NiHSA, yesterday, warned that Rivers Niger and Benue have reached their peak, therefore, posing threat to Nigerians living in the areas.

The federal government warned yesterday, that 32 locations across 11 states might experience heavy rainfall that may lead to severe flooding between yesterday and September 18, 2025.

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NiHSA, predicted yesterday, that 29 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, as well as 107 local government areas and 631 communities were at risk of flooding between now and mid September.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has signed an Exchange of Notes (E/N) agreement with the Government of the People’s Republic of China for a $1 million grant to support ongoing flood relief operations in Northern Nigeria.

“These fires destroy biodiversity and worsen heat waves. People are now collapsing from heatstroke in farming communities. It’s not just food we are losing—it’s health.”

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has distributed food and non-food items to 706 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) affected by recent flash floods in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council and Jere Local Government Area of Borno State.

The Lagos State Government has admitted that residents will continue to experience flash flooding due to the realities of climate change and other environmental factors. It, however, reiterated its commitment to ramping up infrastructure to provide lasting solutions across the state.
