THE first time I watched Fela perform was in the mid-1970s at the Enugu Campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Then, he was lusty and nimble. He sprang across the stage, as he danced, sang and played both the piano and tenor saxophone. Every move he made was mirrored in the sound of the music, as the drummer and the other percussionists followed his every move with their beat. His band members were decked out in pink “Crepelin” outfits.

SINCE the transition to eternal glory of the late Ooni of Ife, Alayeluwa Oba Okunade Sijuwade, the entire world and in particular, the Yorubas at home and in Diaspora have been patiently and eagerly awaiting the proclamation by the traditional kingmakers of the ancient town of the next Ooni of Ife. The interest of the people in the selection of a candidate is due to the revered position of the Ooni stool and roles as the foremost traditional ruler in Yorubaland.

IN the last three weeks, Nigeria and Nigerians have been held spell-bound by the spectacle at the National Assembly, as the Upper legislative chamber, the Senate, screens eminent citizens nominated as ministers by President Muhammadu Buhari. The media frenzy centred around the politics of the screening and the chances of the nominees to scale the hurdles have been captivating.

NOT long after the results of the 2013 governorship election in Anambra State were declared, a friend of mine visited. She came amidst worries over the turn of events. Exuding no geniality and completely void of her characteristic warmth, she expressed fears that the incoming government might not deliver.

MOST Nigerian leaders while in office, get afflicted by two common bugs, namely, the bug of attracting only grave and gold diggers as friends and associates, and the bug of regarding every critique as an enemy, even constructive critiques. Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo is not different, but fortunately, some of us,have resolved to continue to point the right ways to him, in his own interest and that of his people, even when he feels bad about such comments, because we are all involved.
