LAST week, the Emir of Kano and immediate past governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II, roundly criticised both the monetary policies of CBN as well as the fiscal policies of the new Muhammadu Buhari administration.

This new fifth estate has decided that national decisions would no longer be screened on the ideologies of political parties but on the primary factor of their dream Nigeria. Any government that fails to recognize this would be taught that the people is the government and it is therefore guilty of treason.

Imagine that members of the 8th National Assembly had announced during the recent general election campaigns exactly how they were going to tear up section 308 of the 1999 Constitution (which protects the president, vice president, governors and their deputies against civil and criminal proceedings while they are in office) to grant their leaders immunity from prosecution for corruption and money laundering.

BIAFRA is not one of the problems besetting Nigeria. Those unable to appreciate this fact may require a dose of creative thinking. Nigeria’s stubborn thorn in the flesh is its adamant repudiation of the self-evident concept of the changelessness of change, upon which sits a crippling unwillingness to engage that same constancy of change. There are two random but famous declarations – one little remembered today, the other something of a mantra – that neatly wrap up the national antiparty to inexorable change and its management.

SINCE the return to democracy in 1999, we have had the same recurring decimal in our elections, which are the unending election petitions.
