Apart from institutional leakages where deliberate non-implementation of policies has continued to lead to porosity of public funds; braze greed of unpatriotic public servants and sheer lust to climb the ladder of societal superiority are elements that have continued to rekindle the flames of corruption in Africa.

I was elated because, finally, somebody was cutting the politicians to size and telling them that the era of impunity was over. The tribunal noted that it was a fundamental law in Nigeria that a candidate for an elective position must be duly nominated and sponsored by a registered political party before the candidature of such a person can be valid.

OUR leaders have failed us. It is clear that our politics is that of bread and butter politics, that is politics of the stomach. No one is left out; the one that is good is tainted by very bad ones. When you have one good apple mixed with nine bad apples, the result is ten rotten apples. The revelations from the Dasuki investigations are galling and nauseating. It is a surprise that the country is still standing despite the activities of carpetbaggers we have as leaders and politicians.

The late Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu has been my hero right from the time I became politically conscious, however, I wish he had not participated in the January 16th, 1966 coup.

History, some people say, is the best teacher of a people. It is from history a society is able to know about itself, its past, the present and even try to project what tomorrow may be. It is from history that a people are able to learn from its past mistakes and efforts made to avoid pitfalls of the past. It will be therefore unfortunate if the people of our dear state of Taraba (fondly referred to as the Nature’s Gift to the nation) do not want to learn from history at this stage of its stagnation.
