How noise is becoming an environmental threat in Lagos

By Divine grace Onosetale  Lagos was never quiet. But there is a difference between the sound of a city and noise that begins to interfere with everyday life. From the blast of horns in Oshodi to the endless hum of generators in different parts of the state; from loudspeakers at markets and religious centres to […]

My ‘Ordeal’ inside Kirikiri Prison

THIS is not a joke, but a real-life story. I still wonder how my family members, friends and well-wishers would feel about my ‘ordeal’ inside the Kirikiri Medium Security Prison in Apapa, Lagos.

Why xenophobic attacks persist in South Africa

It is saddening to know that Nigerians and other Africans are still being killed on a regular basis in South Africa over what has commonly be referred to as xenophobia. Over a couple of years, many innocent foreigners have been murdered while enormous properties of the victims have also gone down the drain. No doubt, xenophobic violence in South Africa has assumed epidemic proportions, deepened by moments of exceptional viciousness and wickedness. In recent times, many South African nationals have taken the law into their hands and displayed brutal justice on some other foreign nationals on any unsubstantiated and mischievous evidence.

Anti-sexual law and orders: An overview (2)

ABOUT two years ago, the National Assembly passed laws on homosexuality, lesbianism, same sex marriage. These are irrelevant laws. Does the government have to tell the people how to live their lives? It’s a law gone out of direction. Same sex marriage was an issue that was never in the horizon of our social attitude. […]

Osinbajo and the conspiracy of ‘March’

SOMETIMES when you do some introspection of how dates and circumstances bind people together or give effects to situations, you cannot but describe the entire universe as the conspiracy of the Almighty God.

Governor Willie Obiano had just commissioned the first phase of the Lynden Integrated Farms, a sprawling, N15 billion poultry farm set on 75 hectares of land, the largest such agricultural facility in the South East geo-political zone.

Where is Nigeria’s Paul Revere?

Acting President Osinbajo is not a ‘Nigerian’

After watching the Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo in Benin City, Edo State, on TV live during his fact finding meeting with the good people of Edo state, I realised that he is totally not a Nigerian.

Anti-sexual law and orders: An overview

WITH this headline, any critic could conclude that this writing is late but not lost in the underlying effort of some laws in the land which are either duplicates or not too necessary. There are a plethora of them in the country which are mere paper works or an exercise in legal intellectualism. When the anti-sexual bill (to deal with randy lecturers in our universities) was passed into law by the Senate being his (Senator Omo-Agege’s) second in one year, much adulation was poured on him particularly in his constituency as a local homeboy. But my reaction was different not for its sagacious input but on the need for such a law. Shall come to this later.

What the Igbos want in Nigeria (2)

WRITING about the needs of the Igbos or Igbo aspirations, whether in terms of what would make the Igbos happy (or unhappy), is not a difficult thing in any manner.
