WHETHER you are a discerning or dilettante Nigerian, it is not hard to pick holes in the claim, last week, by Hadiza Bala-Usman, the managing director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, that she was attacked at the sprawling National Assembly complex, Abuja, by thugs purportedly sent by the Chairman of Messrs Ocean Maritime Solutions Limited, OMSL, Captain Wells Okunbo.

Dele Sobowale’s “Labour unions in fantasyland over minimum wage”  (see Vanguard Monday 2nd December 2019) rekindled a fond memory of the late witty-wag and veteran newspaper columnist, Chief Bisi Onabanjo (read: Aiyekoto). Asked   in   a television programme: “The Press”, what motivated his weekly witty reflection over the years. One, he said, was an irresistible urge for deliberate mischief. The second,   self-indulgence for want to do. Nobody would ever pretend that we are in the age of humility. I will therefore not be surprised if Uncle Dele, like the late statesman-columnist, would accept that his weekly   word counts   are out of   deliberate mischief   or boredom of retirement.

THOUGH my friend and brother Emeka Okoli has the height and gait of Rangers’ and national team’s former indomitable goal keeper, Emmanuel Okalla; he often wonders why people expend so much time and energy watching the beautiful round leather game of football. Nothing I say will change his stance.
