The power and vast possibilities of the social media has once again played out through the world of visual arts, and the scene of the great event is Nigeria.

MEMBERS of the Nigerian art community were united for a common cause last Thursday as they gathered to celebrate the life and times of an accomplished art scholar, curator, Olabisi Silva, for an evening of tributes at Freedom Park in Lagos.

THE fanfare that heralded the celebration of 100 years of Ondo Boys High School seemed noble, and a sign of great achievement. However, past students and guests at the occasion of the public presentation of the book titled: One Century of Ondo Boys’ High School: The History of Nigeria’s First Community High School, could not help but lament over the deplorable state of education now. This is  as they reminisce the good old days of quality education void of religious and ethnocentric colouration.

FOR Sylvester Aguddah who had worked in the corporate world for years and enjoyed life, leaving the job was like the end of the road. But, the proverbial saying that “when one road closes, another one opens,” came to play in his life as God opened another door for him with his incursion into the art industry.

WHILE Nigerians were busy with the last minute preparations for the rescheduled presidential and National Assembly elections last week, the entire art community, the visual art and the curatorial field in Nigeria suffered a huge blow with the news of the death of Bisi Silva, the artistic director of the radical Centre for Contemporary Art, CCA, Lagos and a juror of the 2013 Venice Biennale.
