The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP is today fighting to stop a possible slide of the country into a one-party rule under the suzerainty of the recently emerged All Progressives Congress, APC. It is an ironical change of fortunes for the party whose officials once boasted of running the affairs of the country uninterrupted till 2059.

THE Oxford and Cambridge Unions were the training ground for speakers who intended to climb the political ladder. Both Universities were the recruitment centres – de rigour – for British political leadership.

Nearly fifty years ago, it is said that people in Enugu, Nsukka, Ngwo, and Abakaliki had little clothes to cover themselves. In 1947, the District Officer prohibited nude people coming to the Ogbete Market in Enugu. Yet, in 20 short years the Igbo were the number one traders in textile. The Onitsha Market was brimming with it. People came to buy from all over Nigeria. In Broad Street, the only competitors in textile trade were those we called Syrians – who were probably Lebanese.
