I felt bad that he had violated my instruction. But on a second thought, I assumed he would not meet them at home since it was late.

A rights group, the Centre for Victims of Extra_Judicial Killings and Torture, CVEKT AFRICA, have petitioned President Umoru Yar’Adua to urgently intervene in the trial of the suspect who allegedly kidnapped and murdered a Chinese national, Mr Feng Shyenyi in the factory of a motor cycle manufacturing company, Innoson group in Nnewi in 2007.

During investigation when Gbenga was in the police cell, an officer, attached to the Command, was given instruction by the officer to freeze the account of Gbenga’s wife, one Mrs Comfort Olubaniyi, with First Bank Account Number, 3873010033099, her account was frozen by this man without even this woman being indicted in any statement by Gbenga who was being detained in the Police cell. Also frozen was the account of Gbenga’s mother-in-law.

The proposed use of full-body Scanners to screen international travelers passing through our international airports will undoubtedly violate the rights to human dignity and privacy of citizens as guaranteed by Sections 34(1)(a) and 37 respectively of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 in so far as no law has been made by the National Assembly to authorize the use of the equipment in the interest of defence, public safety, public order, public morality or public health or for the purpose of protecting the rights and freedom of other persons as permitted by Section 45(1) of the Constitution.

There are many unresolved problems in Nigeria , but the issue of corruption is not only troubling but herculean. The damage it has done is so terrible. The menace of corruption leads to slow movement of files in offices, police extortion and slow traffics on the highways, ghost workers syndrome, election irregularities, etc.

The conduct of transparent, free and fair elections is central to the credibility of the electoral process and the level of the acceptability of the outcome by the candidates and the public. “The winners of an election are usually satisfied with the outcome, but it is often more challenging to persuade the losers (and their supporters) that they lost.

The absence of President Umar Yar’adua and the ruling PDP’s (mis)handling of Nigeria’s current political situation can be likened to soap opera about a family whose bread winner is missing. And as soap operas go it has a hint of comedy, intrigue, tragedy and drama. Though only time can tell whether or not it will have a happy ending.
