THERE was pandemonium at the early hours of yesterday around 2nd West Circular road, Benin City when residents woke up to discover the corpse of a lady in her thirties deposited in a bathroom by her alleged lover. The yet to be identified lady was said to have passed the night in her lover’s house at 17b Akugbe Road where Uwa market is located, off TV Road, Benin city.

The call was a surprise. And in the words of our Crime Editor, Emma Nnadozie “it was shocking but revealing and even pathetic.” The caller had said “hold on for Evans’ wife.” The female voice quickly pleaded to Mr. Nnadozie to call her back as she did not have enough credit. Nnadozie returned the call from Ghana and the caller told her story. Excerpts:

THE lifestyle of Evans Onwuamadike , the 36 year –old Nnewi, Anambra State –born kidnap kingpin arrested last weekend in Lagos, is different from that of most kidnappers who hailed from the state. This is because unlike his contemporaries who exhibit stupendous wealth in their communities and built mansions and business empires, which were demolished by government on discovery of the source of such wealth, Evans has nothing to show in his Akamili, Umudim, Nnewi village, or even anywhere in Anambra State.

“I want to die. I can’t stand this humiliation’’ he emotionally said in a chat with Saturday Vanguard a few days after his arrest.
