The Senate on Wednesday expressed confidence on the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) readiness to conduct free, fair and credible elections. The Senate President, David Mark, disclosed this when the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, briefed the house and demonstrated how the card reader would be used during plenary.

Some senators on Wednesday in Abuja expressed the desire for Service Chiefs to be summoned to the Senate to brief members on security issues which led to the rescheduling of the general elections. The senators made their desire known in a session with newsmen shortly after the appearance of Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, at the senate to explain reasons for shifting the polls. Jega had, while announcing the postponement of the elections on Feb. 8, predicated on the advice of the nation’s security chiefs.

A further postponement of Nigeria’s general elections beyond the rescheduled polling day of March 28 would be “unconstitutional”, INEC boss, Attahiru Jega, said on Wednesday. “I don’t see how anybody can contemplate any extension beyond these six weeks because there is no constitutional grounds on which you can do that,” Jega said in testimony to the Senate.
