Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called for the inclusion of students in private universities as beneficiaries in the Student Loan Scheme being floated by the federal government.

His academic prowess extends beyond standardised tests. In the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), with a score of 358, he ranked as the second best in Nigeria for the year 2023. 

Nigeria faces a serious problem: too many children are out of school. In Oyo State alone, over 20% of kids are not enrolled in formal education.

“With the changing demographics of our great nation, the government has recognised the importance of allowing NOUN graduates to participate in the NYSC scheme.”

Students of polytechnics in Nigeria stormed Osogbo, Osun State capital, on Wednesday, protesting against continuous disparity between the Higher National Diploma (HND) and Bachelor’s degree (BSc).

Condemnation has continued to greet the new fee regime announced by the management of the University of Ibadan, UI, in which new students are to pay between N230,000 and N412,000, a huge leap from the N64, 600 new students paid last year.

“Well, I don’t want to go into the issue of figures, whether it’s 10.2 or less or more, but the fact is that we have millions of Nigerians who are supposed to be in school and who are not in school at this point in time and we are addressing that.”

First degree graduates of the National Open University of Nigeria,NOUN, will soon start participating in the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC scheme,the university’s vice chancellor,Prof. Olufemi Peters,has assured.
