Three weeks ago we published an editorial reflecting on the current foreign exchange policy where the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has tried to arrest illicit foreign currency circulations within the economy as well as outflows from the economy. We have since been bombarded with outcries and more questions by concerned Nigerians adversely affected by the policy.

The appointment of the former Chairman, Lagos State Internal Revenue Board (LIRS), Mr. Babatunde Fowler as the Chairman Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) did not come to many Nigerians as a surprise. Fowler had raised the internal revenue of Lagos to an enviable position such that an impressed President Muhammadu Buhari was quoted after his electoral victory as saying he would attempt to replicate the Lagos internal revenue generation model at the federal level.

Perhaps, never before in history had Europe faced the suffocating number of displaced persons desperately knocking on its doors to be let in. Wars, religious extremism, repressive regimes and battered economies are responsible for the uprooting of over 19 million people worldwide, especially Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

OSUN is one of the states owing workers’ salaries for several months. Like in other affected states across the country, the situation has foisted untold hardship on the workers and their families. Some of them have been sending SOS to their friends and relations. Feeding has become difficult and their children sent out of schools over inability to pay fees.

The Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, has renewed the advocacy by the Nigerian Police high command for victims of gunshot wounds to be given adequate and prompt treatment by doctors and medical personnel.
