NIGERIAN Army Board of Inquiry constituted to investigate alleged professional misconduct by some officers in the 2015 general elections has returned a punitive recommendation of compulsory retirement of two senior officers.

BARELY a year and a half after the Ebola plague and its containment, the nation is grappling with another scourge, Lassa Fever. So far, 41 lives have been lost and cases have been confirmed in 10 states accross the country namely: Plateau, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, Nassarawa, Niger, Kano, Edo, Ondo and Oyo. There were unconfirmed cases in Lagos and Rivers. The situation has fuelled a fresh fear of more loss of lives if urgent steps are not taken to stem the tide of its spread.

IN every constitutional democracy, the judiciary is one of the major pillars that sustains its principles and tenets. It is an embodiment of equity,fairness,justice and rule of law. Without the judiciary which is regarded as the last hope of the aggrieved,law and order will stand on their heads. It is against this backdrop that justice must not only be done by the institution but must be seen by all to have been done.

AS Nigerian fiscal and monetary policy authorities and political leaders receive the team of economists from the International Monetary Fund, IMF, who are expected to scrutinise the 2016 budget and possibly the Medium Term Expenditure Framework, MTEF, 2016 – 2018, we expect utmost care on the part of the public policy executives to delineate Nigeria’s national interest from classical economics.

LAST week was quite eventful for Nigeria and the challenged economy. The Manging Director of the International Monetary Fund, IMF, Ms Christine Lagarde, held extensive meetings with the nation’s political and economy elite. Amongst them were the Governor and executives of the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Finance Minister, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, Budget and Planning Minister, Mr. Udo Udoma, the leadership of both chambers of the National Assembly as well as chief executives of commercial banks in the country.
