Unhappy democracy day! By Donu Kogbara

Last year, on this very same date, I pointed out that there was nothing happy or authentic about Naija style democracy; and I’m still searching for evidence that we are enjoying government of the people, for the people and by the people…on some important levels at least. Sadly, such evidence continues to elude me and […]

A soluble problem?

We keep receiving conflicting and confusing information about the Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, the militant group that has been waging war on the Nigerian Government and inflicting huge losses on the oil industry for the past few months.

Northern Christians

LAST week, I published a sad letter I’d received from a Northern Christian from Borno State. He complained about myriad injustices that the Muslim majority had been inflicting on his people, whom he described as a silently suffering voiceless minority. And I, ever-eager to leap to the defence of the oppressed, sympathised.

Chronic injustices!

We often simplistically refer to “The North” as if it is a monolithic unit. It is easy to forget that there are actually different Northerners and that a significant number are not Hausa-Fulanis or members of the Sunni Muslim majority.

The Speaker speaks!

Earlier on this week, the Right Honourable Yakubu Dogara, Speaker of the House of Representatives, addressed a National Stakeholders Summit on Petroleum Industry Reforms in Abuja. Here are some excerpts from his speech:

Cameron the great!

DAVID Cameron, the outgoing British Prime Minister, has made mistakes (who hasn’t?). But at critical junctures – in the past few days especially – he has behaved impeccably and proved that he is the product of a good upbringing and a gentleman.

Hollow assurances!

THE Deputy High Commissioner of Sierra Leone to Nigeria, Major-General Alfred William, who was kidnapped on the Abuja- Kaduna road on July 1, has been released.

Britain shoots itself in the foot

Last week, I told you that I was in London and had just voted in the European Union, EU, Referendum. The British Prime Minister, David Cameron, had triggered off the Referendum to give citizens and residents of the United Kingdom, UK, a chance to decide whether they wanted the UK to leave or remain in the EU.

Frivolous show-offs!

Last week, a British TV station, Channel 4, screened a documentary titled “Lagos To London: Britain’s New Super-Rich”. And I couldn’t believe my ears or eyes.

Good news for a change!

I’ve been in London for the past five months, but I read Nigerian newspapers online every day and I am in regular contact with Nigerian friends, colleagues and relatives.

Foreign medicals controversy

I hear that Nigerian doctors are very unhappy about President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to seek medical treatment for a persistent ear infection in London.
