Locking the back door of the soul, by Muyiwa Adetiba

Everyone knew he was a ‘born again’. Looking back now, I suspect he wanted everyone to know. It was something he wanted to wear on his sleeve. He didn’t have the flamboyance of a guy whose job brought him in contact with Advertising Agencies and Marketing Executives of big companies. His dressing was neat but understated. He […]

Who is a Lagosian?

About 12, 15 years ago, when the issue of who is really a Lagosian was nothing more than a stimulating debate among friends, I had asked a friend to write an article on it for me. His was one of the more passionate voices when the issue was discussed at Ikoyi Club amidst banter and drinks then. He had every reason to be passionate. He was born and bred in Isale Eko, the ‘cradle’ of Lagos of Edo father and Yoruba mother.

Riding into sunset

It is exactly six weeks to May 29 today. Six weeks to the end of Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s six year presidency. This, as traditions go all over the world, is called the transition period and it is a most difficult period to manage—for the incumbent, the incoming and the nation.

Lest we forget

By Muyiwa Adetiba Eminent personalities from within and without have been effusive in their praise of President Jonathan since the remarkable concession that gave the electoral victory to General Buhari. And so it should be. Very few men in history and fewer still from Africa, have conceded defeat even before the final count was announced. […]

God is at the window

By Muyiwa Adetiba Tomorrow is Easter Sunday; one of the most important dates in the Christian calendar. It commemorates the day Jesus, our Redeemer, rose from the dead thereby destroying the power of death. It also signifies an end to the six week Lenten season. To us in Nigeria, it also signifies an end in […]

A prayer for Nigeria, my country

Just picture this scene. A bus full of people of different ages and nationalities, is parked at the slope of a hill, a few meters from the sea. The sea waves are gentle as they caress the base of the hill. The sea looks calm but deep.

Final appeal to fellow Nigerians

Nigerians go to the polls Saturday to choose their next President. If all goes well, it would be a fresh mandate for the lucky winner and a new lease of life for Nigeria. The two main contestants, Buhari and Jonathan, by now have a pretty good idea what the problems of the country are simply by going round the country and listening to the people.

Old school values

Last month, I stepped, no, drove confidently with a wife and son in tow, to the same compound I first tentatively stepped into as a shy, small boy some 50 years ago. My first port of call was the chapel where a thanksgiving service was going on. This chapel held many bitter/sweet memories for me because it was, in my early years before the school hall was rebuilt, more than a prayer ground.

Main factor against Jonathan’s re-election

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about the factors that would likely inhibit General Muhammadu Buhari from occupying Aso Rock in June. The reaction I got surprised me. People I had not heard from in a long while called to register their views.

Re: The forces against Buhari

Excellent article! Bottom line message is clear: Nigerians must seize the destiny of Nigeria from the hands of its oppressive and corrupt ruling elites and install intelligent, competent and patriotic anti-corruption crusaders. India, China, UAE and Qatar used to be Nigeria’s contemporaries. They were at one point worse off than Nigeria. But look at how they have leaped forward today.

The forces against Buhari

I got a call from a close friend the other day that left me speechless. He had expressed the thoughts that he was wary of a Buhari presidency because of the fear of Islamisation. He is a medical doctor; well travelled and well read.
