About 12, 15 years ago, when the issue of who is really a Lagosian was nothing more than a stimulating debate among friends, I had asked a friend to write an article on it for me. His was one of the more passionate voices when the issue was discussed at Ikoyi Club amidst banter and drinks then. He had every reason to be passionate. He was born and bred in Isale Eko, the ‘cradle’ of Lagos of Edo father and Yoruba mother.

Just picture this scene. A bus full of people of different ages and nationalities, is parked at the slope of a hill, a few meters from the sea. The sea waves are gentle as they caress the base of the hill. The sea looks calm but deep.

Nigerians go to the polls Saturday to choose their next President. If all goes well, it would be a fresh mandate for the lucky winner and a new lease of life for Nigeria. The two main contestants, Buhari and Jonathan, by now have a pretty good idea what the problems of the country are simply by going round the country and listening to the people.

Last month, I stepped, no, drove confidently with a wife and son in tow, to the same compound I first tentatively stepped into as a shy, small boy some 50 years ago. My first port of call was the chapel where a thanksgiving service was going on. This chapel held many bitter/sweet memories for me because it was, in my early years before the school hall was rebuilt,more than a prayer ground.

Bottom line message is clear: Nigerians must seize the destiny of Nigeria from the hands of its oppressive and corrupt ruling elites and install intelligent, competent and patriotic anti-corruption crusaders. India, China, UAE and Qatar used to be Nigeria’s contemporaries. They were at one point worse off than Nigeria. But look at how they have leaped forward today.

I got a call from a close friend the other day that left me speechless. He had expressed the thoughts that he was wary of a Buhari presidency because of the fear of Islamisation. He is a medical doctor; well travelled and well read.
