June 16, 2011, will again enter my short list of days to remember; it was a Thursday – a black Thursday for Nigeria. It was our own equivalent of the Al Qeda attack on the United States on September 11, 2001. To most Nigerians, it would only be remembered as the day the Police Headquarters in Abuja, the Louis Edet House, was bombed by Boko Haram muslim sect.

If your gen-set is off, it must have been turned off on account of overwork or because you can no longer afford the N170+ price of diesel – when you can find it. The Supreme Court of Nigeria has got caught in a web, inadvertently though, of its own making. Indeed, if it were not tragic, it would have been extremely hilarious. The highest court in the land recently gave a ruling which is not being obeyed and which cannot, and should not, be obeyed.

This column could easily have been titled I dey laugh too O! And, it would still have been apt. In fact, if all the reasons for my post-election laughter were to be written and analysed, it would require a whole booklet to do justice to it all. Since this piece is being read today, Sunday, May 29, 2011, the day President Goodluck Jonathan is being sworn in as the substantive Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Incorporated, it is perhaps the best day to recap a few issues which others have either habitually or inadvertently or deliberately forgotten.

And, for every politician who joins the Government of National Unity, GNU, or decamps true democracy is deferred. President Jonathan won the election, until the courts say otherwise. Every member of any of the opposition parties, elected or not, who seeks appointment under the foolish contraption called GNU should be regarded as an enemy of our fledgling democracy. Jonathan should not even consider them.
