A group, Imo Lawyers for the Defence of Democracy, has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, to avoid personal exchanges over political disagreements.

The lawyers made the call during a press conference on Friday, September 18, 2026, in response to what they described as continued public attacks by the FCT Minister against the governor.

The group said political disagreements should be addressed through democratic engagement, dialogue and lawful processes rather than personal criticisms.

According to the lawyers, recent media reports quoted Wike as making comments concerning Uzodinma’s political activities within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his position on the proposed Rainbow Coalition.

They alleged that the APC Governors’ Forum had rejected the political arrangement and argued that any disagreement should be directed at the forum rather than the Imo governor.

The group stressed that Uzodinma, as the constitutionally elected governor of Imo State, should be allowed to discharge his duties without what it described as unnecessary political tension.

“We recognise the constitutional right of every Nigerian, including public officials and political actors, to express political opinions, criticise policies and participate in political activities. However, that freedom must not become a licence for personal attacks, intimidation or unnecessary escalation,” the group said.

The lawyers urged Wike to stop further public comments concerning Uzodimma, adding that political debates should focus on policies, programmes, positions and verifiable facts.

They also called on President Bola Tinubu to encourage restraint among political actors, while urging Uzodinma to continue operating within the provisions of the Constitution.

The group further appealed to political leaders, parties and media platforms to avoid statements capable of heightening tensions in the state.

“Imo State deserves peace. Nigeria deserves responsible political leadership. Political disagreements are normal in a democracy, but personal hostility must not undermine democratic institutions or endanger public peace,” the group said.
