New Skool Ogene positions itself beyond genre as a cultural sound system

As conversations around African music continue to expand globally, New Skool Ogene (NSO) is taking a different approach by positioning itself not as another music genre but as a cultural sound system rooted in Ogene and Igbo identity.

Rather than competing within existing genres, NSO says its focus is on creating a long-term cultural framework where indigenous rhythm, storytelling, identity and community can evolve without losing their origin.

According to the initiative, the vision extends beyond music releases. It includes documentation, live performance, education, creative collaboration and future cultural infrastructure aimed at ensuring Ogene remains a living tradition for younger generations.

One of the project’s distinguishing features is its introduction of Sound Divisions. Instead of separating artists by genre, NSO is developing creative pathways including Rhythm Forge, Soul Motion, Pulse Culture and Fierce Fusion, with room for additional divisions as the system grows.

The founder currently explores all four divisions while developing the framework. Future artists, however, are expected to contribute through the division that best reflects their voice, musical strengths and artistic direction, allowing the wider system to grow while maintaining a clear identity.

NSO also maintains that becoming a cultural sound system does not prevent collaboration with artists from other genres. Instead, collaborations are viewed as opportunities to expand cultural dialogue without redefining NSO as a branch of another sound.

Still in its early stages, the independently funded initiative says its long-term ambition is to build a cultural institution that extends beyond music into documentation, education, archives, community and global cultural exchange.

For NSO, the objective is not simply to release songs, but to demonstrate that indigenous culture can continue to evolve while remaining true to its roots.
