Mercedes Iweka tasks young professionals on building networks, career

Renowned pharmaceutical executive and entrepreneur, Chief Ambassador Mercedes Iweka, has encouraged young professionals and aspiring entrepreneurs to prioritise resilience, strategic networking and continuous self-development as they navigate today’s evolving corporate environment.

Iweka gave the advice while speaking at the Mentor MeetUP held at Café One, University of Lagos (UNILAG), where students, entrepreneurs and early-career professionals gathered to discuss career growth and professional development.

Drawing from her experience in pharmacology, corporate product management and entrepreneurship, Iweka urged participants to remain adaptable in the face of changing industry demands.

“Success is not a straight line. True leadership requires professional resilience and the agility to execute strategic career transitions when the market demands it,” she said.

Speaking on the theme, Mastering the Pivot & Owning Your Value, she highlighted the importance of building meaningful professional relationships, noting that sustainable career growth is driven by networks founded on mutual value rather than transactional engagements.

According to her, consistency, character and competence remain the key pillars for building professional credibility and long-term success.

“The powerful synergy between consistency, character and competence forms the ultimate framework for long-term professional credibility and success. Without these core pillars, no business or personal brand can withstand the pressures of today’s market,” she added.

Beyond career development, Iweka also spoke about the importance of social responsibility, linking professional excellence with advocacy for safer and more inclusive communities. She referenced her work against gender-based violence through the Black Diamonds Support Foundation’s Walk and Talk Against Rape and Abuse (WATARA) initiative.

The event concluded with a networking session supported by Café One and partner organisations, including Teleport Mega Zone Travel, Eventor, Rosella and Bartrd.

Participants described the session as insightful, citing the practical guidance on career development, leadership and entrepreneurship shared during the programme.
