Forum raises concern over Bayelsa bridge design

Bayelsa

YENAGOA—The Maritime Logistics Suppliers and Operators’ Forum has called on Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State to review the design of bridges in the on-going Nembe-Brass Road project, saying their low height is hindering maritime transportation and affecting economic activities in the area.

The group, however, commended the governor for the successful execution of Phase One of the Nembe-Brass Road project, noting that it has brought relief and economic benefits to residents in line with the administration’s Prosperity Agenda.

In a letter titled “Our Concern” and addressed to Governor Diri, the Forum’s Chairman, Prince Tuguemi Ebi-Inala, expressed worries that the design of some bridges could undermine the long-term economic benefits of the project.

According to the group, the bridge constructed across Kiberi Creek in the first phase of the project is too low, restricting the movement of commercial boats and heavy-duty marine equipment.

The Forum said the development has adversely affected local traders, particularly women engaged in fish trading, as well as major oil and gas operators, including Oando Plc, Conoil, Aiteo and Renaissance Energy Ltd.

The letter stated: “No matter how lofty a project may be, government and citizens may not derive maximum benefits if it is not backed by careful planning and execution.
