Popular YouTuber Jesse Ridgway and his wife, Ashley, have revealed that they ended a pregnancy after learning their unborn baby had Trisomy 21, commonly known as Down syndrome.
Ridgway shared the emotional update through a series of Instagram Stories, explaining that the decision came after weeks of consultations, personal reflection and discussions with medical professionals, genetic counselors, friends and family members.
According to him, his initial reaction to the diagnosis was not to terminate the pregnancy, as he believed he could handle the challenges that might come with raising a child with special needs.
However, he said his perspective changed as he researched the condition and learned more about some of the medical complications often associated with Down syndrome, including heart defects, hearing problems and developmental delays.
“I didn’t fully understand Down syndrome when I first heard the news,” Ridgway explained, noting that the information he gathered helped shape the couple’s decision.
The YouTuber also addressed criticism from some followers, acknowledging that not everyone would agree with the choice he and Ashley made.
Rather than seeking approval, he said the couple acted based on what they believed was best for their family and future.
Ridgway expressed appreciation for supporters living with Down syndrome and autism, as well as families caring for loved ones with similar conditions.
He praised their resilience and dedication, stressing that his decision was not intended as a judgment on others who choose a different path.
“We chose what we believe will be best for our family in the long run,” he said.
The content creator added that although the experience has been painful, he and Ashley remain hopeful about the future and plan to try for another child when they are ready.
The decision has led to supporters expressing sympathy for the couple while others questioned the decision, reigniting conversations around prenatal testing, disability and reproductive choices.
