The Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, on Thursday, called on President Bola Tinubu to resign over worsening insecurity, accusing him of failing in his primary duty to protect the lives and property of Nigerians.

The opposition party said violent crime had spread across the country to the point where no Nigerian could feel safe, arguing that citizens who face daily security threats cannot afford to wait until the 2027 general elections for change.

The position was contained in a statement signed by the PRP National Chairman, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed.

“It is now beyond doubt that President Bola Tinubu has failed woefully in discharging his foremost responsibility as President of Nigeria: securing the lives and property of Nigerian citizens,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He said security challenges facing the country had worsened under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration, leaving more Nigerians vulnerable to violent crime.

Baba-Ahmed said, “From generals to toddlers; from Bama to Badagry, no Nigerian appears safe under this leadership.

“It is no longer the case that only certain parts of the country have been effectively surrendered to criminal elements. Today, Nigerians across the country live under the shadow of rampant violence perpetrated by criminals who continue to exploit the nation’s security weaknesses.”

The party also raised concerns over the growing vulnerability of schoolchildren and other soft targets amid persistent attacks by criminal groups.

“Schoolchildren have joined the growing list of soft targets, while the country appears dangerously close to accepting this grim reality as normal. We must not submit to the failures of leadership or the excesses of violent criminals. This is not how Nigerians should live.”

Baba-Ahmed further faulted the President’s handling of security, arguing that the concentration of political authority at the centre had not translated into improved protection for citizens.

“President Tinubu has failed the nation, and there is little evidence that he can reverse his dismal record. He has concentrated enormous power in his hands, yet has failed to use it effectively to protect and defend Nigerians.

“In most democracies, such a failure to uphold the principles of accountability and responsibility would not be tolerated. Nigerians must rise and demand an end to this ineptitude and indifference. President Tinubu should resign now,” he said.

The PRP chairman maintained that Nigerians living under the threat of violent crime should not be expected to wait until the next election before seeking change.

“While he may choose to ignore the country’s deteriorating security situation and wait for the verdict of voters in 2027, the Nigerians who continue to fall victim to violent criminals do not have the luxury of waiting until the next election.

“There is nothing democratic about insisting that incompetent and uncaring leadership must be allowed to complete its tenure regardless of performance. Nigerians should demand, with one voice, that President Tinubu’s failure to secure the country can no longer be tolerated,” Baba-Ahmed stressed.
